Whilst looking up these photographers, I came across these links. I have put them up on here so I can refer back to them during my research.

Street Photography

"Compare and contrast the street photography work of any two photographers working in the period 1960 – Now"

The reason for choosing this essay question is because I have a high interest in how photographers have used Google street view. I want to Compare and Contrast the different reasons into why they have chosen to use street view for their work.

The photographers that I will be looking at are:-

Doug Rickard - A new American picture
Jon Rafman - The nine eyes of Google street view
Mishka Henner - No man's land

Photographing ourselves

I have put this essay title:
"Within Western culture, the body which is visible to the public gaze is young, beautiful and healthy’.
Consider this statement more fully and relate it to the work of one or two recent photographers who attempt to ‘challenge’ such stereotypes."  underneath the theme photographing ourselves. I have done this as I didn't feel it fit in with any of the other themes that were given.
Even though the essay isn't targeted at just photographing ourselves, it is looking at what is visible in the public gaze and how, as part of the public, we perceive ourselves and our looks compared to what is on view in magazines and on TV.

I feel that when we view these types of images we try to make ourselves look like the model; 'young beautiful and healthy'. The photographers I have researched, who attempt to 'challenge' this stereotype, use themselves in their photographs; and this is why I used the theme 'Photographing ourselves'

Photographers I know who challenge these stereotypes are:-
Jo Spence
Rosy Martin
Melanie Manchot

Street photography or Photographing ourselves?

Hi,

I am Jane and this is my blog for a research file I am doing for Photography and Critical theory.

In this blog I will be researching images and information for my essay that I will be writing, and hopefully all this information will come together.

I have two possible essays that I want to follow up on:-

Within Western culture, the body which is visible to the public gaze is young, beautiful and healthy’.
Consider this statement more fully and relate it to the work of one or two recent photographers who attempt to ‘challenge’ such stereotypes.

OR

Compare and contrast the street photography work of any two photographers working in the period 1960 –now

I will hopefully be able to decide which essay I would like to continue with, whilst doing more research.
