Photographing ourselves

I have put this essay title:
"Within Western culture, the body which is visible to the public gaze is young, beautiful and healthy’.
Consider this statement more fully and relate it to the work of one or two recent photographers who attempt to ‘challenge’ such stereotypes."  underneath the theme photographing ourselves. I have done this as I didn't feel it fit in with any of the other themes that were given.
Even though the essay isn't targeted at just photographing ourselves, it is looking at what is visible in the public gaze and how, as part of the public, we perceive ourselves and our looks compared to what is on view in magazines and on TV.

I feel that when we view these types of images we try to make ourselves look like the model; 'young beautiful and healthy'. The photographers I have researched, who attempt to 'challenge' this stereotype, use themselves in their photographs; and this is why I used the theme 'Photographing ourselves'

Photographers I know who challenge these stereotypes are:-
Jo Spence
Rosy Martin
Melanie Manchot
